Challenge

Genesys is a free global portal that allows the exploration of the world's crop diversity through a single website. It is managed by the international organization Global Crop Diversity Trust. Genesys connects two groups of stakeholders. The first one is data providers: national, regional and international genebanks, and the second group is breeders, researchers, and policymakers who use Genesys to inform their own work. Our goal was to make Genesys fit for simple data entry and exploration across the expanding database and create a user-friendly platform where genebanks share information about сrops and trees. It was essential to help plant breeders easily identify material for developing new varieties resistant to pests, diseases, and changing climatic conditions.

Solution

We designed the platform so that users can find an accession quickly. Elasticsearch turned out to be a great solution that allows for full-text search and filtering for specific values. For interactive map-based seek, we made Javascript solution based on Leaflet. Users can sort cultivars by climate conditions and other filters and see climate visually at the origin with precipitation on colorful diagrams. For engaging genebanks in data sharing, we provided them with solutions that simplify the process. The Genesys platform offers APIs and allows using a Java-based Anno upload tool for quick data contribution. We made the Anno app downloadable to convert users’ Excel and CSV files and database SQL queries to Multi-Crop Passport Descriptor format.

Results

Aimprosoft significantly contributed to a platform of global importance. We are so proud to have a direct bearing on the building of a metadata-based Genesys catalog. It is the largest database of plant genetic resources. Users are now able to explore data of over 4M plant samples. Aimprosoft has a key role to play in developing the web portal. Using it, farmers worldwide can request seeds and planting materials from many of the genebanks holding them. The project experiences a permanent improvement. We are going to move forward.
