Challenge

A leading hypermarket wanted to engage shoppers directly in their stores through an interactive digital experience that promotes their brand and encourages purchases. The goal was to design a simple yet captivating promotional game playable on touchscreen panels installed in retail locations. The game needed to be quick, easy to understand, and deliver instant rewards in the form of discount coupons, increasing foot traffic and customer loyalty.

Key objectives were:

Creating a fast-paced, time-limited gameplay suitable for in-store casual players
Ensuring intuitive controls for a wide audience, including non-gamers
Designing visually appealing levels that fit within a single screen for quick orientation
Integrating with external touch panel hardware for seamless in-store interaction
Delivering a clear call-to-action to guide players toward obtaining discount coupons
 

Solution

We developed a 2D isometric platformer with side view mechanics tailored for public touchscreens. The gameplay features:

Core Gameplay:

The player’s character runs forward automatically through a maze-like level consisting of multiple platforms
Players tap the screen to make the character jump, overcoming obstacles and moving between platforms via ladders or controlled falls
At specific checkpoints, animated text windows appear with promotional messages or tips
The entire level fits on one screen to ensure players can quickly orient themselves without scrolling
Gameplay is limited to 2.5 minutes to maintain fast session turnover and keep the experience engaging
If the player fails to reach the finish within the time limit, they are directed to a feedback form

Technical Highlights:

Developed multiple map variants to optimize level design and ensure smooth player progression
Seamless integration with external touchscreen panels installed in the hypermarket for in-store play
Lightweight, responsive controls adapted to tap-only input for accessibility to all age groups
End-of-level splash screens reinforcing the brand and instructions to claim discount coupons

Results

The promo game effectively engaged shoppers at the point of sale, driving increased dwell time near the touchscreen kiosks and incentivizing coupon redemptions. The easy-to-learn mechanics and short sessions fit perfectly into the retail environment, making the brand interaction memorable and fun. This innovative gamified promotion helped the hypermarket enhance customer engagement and boosted sales through targeted offers.
