Challenge

The project aimed to overcome significant barriers in teaching elementary mathematics to children across the globe. Traditional methods had often been static and unengaging, which had resulted in low retention and a lack of enthusiasm towards learning maths. The project faced the challenge of developing an interactive application that was both educational and engaging. The team had to create 387 comprehensive mathematical lessons – averaging 3600 individual screens with varied functionalities – to cater to different age groups and learning abilities. Moreover, ensuring the content was accessible and child-friendly had required innovative design elements such as appealing animations, eye-catching typography, and an intuitive interface that mimicked the experience of playing a game while learning. The application had to meet the needs of diverse stakeholders including children, teachers, parents, schools, and governments, and it was also designed to be multi-lingual to serve underdeveloped, developing, and developed countries. This ambitious project had thus demanded a delicate balance between robust educational content and interactive, engaging design, all within a limited timeframe.

Solution

The team crafted a bespoke application that transformed the traditional approach to learning maths by incorporating engaging, child-friendly designs and animations.  Each lesson was designed with a dynamic and interactive approach, utilising captivating fonts and graphical animations to simplify complex concepts and hold the children’s attention. Additionally, the application had been built to support multiple languages, ensuring that it could be accessed and understood in various regions across the world. Complementing the lessons, a Teacher’s Note PDF had been developed to assist educators in delivering the content more effectively. This comprehensive solution provided a robust yet flexible platform that catered to a wide range of users – from students and teachers to policymakers – and was designed to be easily deployable on multiple devices at an affordable cost.

Results

The rollout of the "Everybody Counts" application had resulted in a transformative impact on maths education across various global regions. The interactive design had significantly enhanced engagement among children, leading to improved comprehension and retention of mathematical concepts. Feedback from educators and stakeholders confirmed that the blend of traditional lesson content with interactive animations had made learning more enjoyable and effective. The platform was capable of handling a diverse range of educational content with varying levels of complexity, tailored to the needs of different age groups. Moreover, the multi-lingual feature ensured that the application was accessible to children in both underdeveloped and developed countries, thereby fulfilling the project's mission of "Changing the way the world learns maths, one country at a time. The innovative approach had not only met but exceeded the expectations of schools and governments in the 10 global locations where the application was tested, including Cambodia and Vietnam. Ultimately, the project paved the way for a more engaging and effective mode of maths education, setting a new benchmark in the field and instilling hope for the future of learning.
