Wargaming, a major player in the free-to-play MMO market, faced an escalating threat from DDoS attacks in 2021 as the gaming and entertainment industries saw significant growth. These attacks had become more sophisticated, targeting web applications and mimicking legitimate gaming traffic, making them harder to detect. The challenge was to protect their game servers and infrastructure from large-scale DDoS attacks, which, if not managed effectively, could disrupt service for their 200 million users.


Gcore, a defense systems provider, implemented a robust solution to combat DDoS attacks on Wargaming. Gcore approach involved: - Leveraging high network capacity and a large number of high-speed channels to receive and process traffic. - Using filter rules to protect against amplification attacks and directing malicious traffic to a cleaning system. - Establishing a secret key transfer between client applications and the cleaning center to distinguish between legitimate and malicious traffic. - Distributing traffic across multiple servers and cleaning centers during powerful attacks to prevent overloading.


The Gcore defense systems successfully defended Wargaming against a massive DDoS attack on February 18, 2021, with a total volume of 253 Gbps. The attack, which lasted about 15 minutes, was mitigated by deflection and deep analysis of the malicious traffic. By ensuring the safety of Wargaming's infrastructure and high-quality cleaning of malicious traffic, the game server users continued to enjoy uninterrupted service. The result was the availability of Wargaming's resources to users worldwide throughout the attack. Gcore's comprehensive protection algorithms and advanced cleaning system played a pivotal role in achieving this success.
