Challenge

An information agency specializing in financial markets ran a web service for professionals at companies that invest in bonds. Each of those companies had a bond portfolio that needed active management to extract valuable insight, yet they relied on a patchwork of low-automation tools. The result was elevated risk, poor visibility into positions, missed opportunities, and slow, time-consuming processes. The agency wanted to streamline and automate portfolio management by giving investors a way to track the latest information on their bond holdings in one place. Lacking the in-house engineering competencies to build such a service, it looked for a partner with proven investment-software experience to bring the idea to life.

Solution

Working closely with the client's team, our engineers created a fully integrated bond portfolio management tool that helps investors organize the purchase of bonds and Eurobonds, view the current condition of their portfolio, and build statistical reports. Before buying, investors can inspect instrument quotes on selected trade floors together with issue parameters and key values such as yields and their changes, duration, and ACI, plus country, industry, sector, and currency. A rich information base powers reports on total portfolio cost as both a sum and a progress history across periods, the distribution of investments by country, sector, branch, issuer, repayment, and Lombard, and a detailed history of past purchases. The product was built around a database of bonds available for purchase, with detailed offering data including yield effect and duration, automatic alerts when yields reach a high point, an events calendar of upcoming securities events, and an operations archive that records every action with flexible filtering. It was implemented with the Zend Framework, PHP, MySQL, Ajax, jQuery, Memcache, and Highcharts.

Results

The engagement delivered a web-based tool, fully integrated into the client's existing service, that gives financial and investment professionals an automated way to track their bond activities and generate the reports they need to operate successfully in the markets. By adding this functionality, the agency expanded the capabilities of its informational web service and made it noticeably more convenient for users; early testing showed a measurable rise in user satisfaction. The client was fully satisfied with the custom web application development and gained a differentiated feature that strengthened the value of its platform for a demanding professional audience.
