
Blockchain-Based Wine Supply Chain Software with NFT Bottle Passports
Challenge
A French supply-chain technology startup set out to promote transparency and fight counterfeiting in the premium wine industry. It wanted a one-of-a-kind platform to streamline multi-tier wine supply-chain planning and give producers, distributors, and consumers full visibility into provenance and chain of custody, ensuring authenticity at every stage. The startup chose blockchain for a complete, tamper-resistant record of transactions, with each bottle receiving a tradeable NFT digital passport to enable en primeur sales and bottle-level supply control. It had a clear business idea but doubted its technical feasibility and lacked the in-house skills to build the product, so it needed a reliable partner experienced in startup consulting, blockchain, and custom supply-chain software to turn the concept into reality on a tight timeline.

The engagement began with a structured discovery stage: consultants interviewed stakeholders, explored the needs of every user segment from winemakers to consumers, ran onsite sessions with a prominent winemaker, and studied market trends and competitors, then produced a detailed requirements specification, several architecture and tech-stack options with a cost-benefit comparison, a development plan, and a market-entry strategy. Development was split into two stages so winemakers could start at the next en primeur season and the startup could earn revenue sooner. A fully managed team working in one-week Scrum sprints delivered an MVP in about 2.5 months, then evolved it with releases every two weeks. The product combined a Polygon blockchain database of immutable supply-chain transactions, a PHP back end automating order processing, fulfillment planning, and passport creation with tracking at bottle, carton, and pallet levels via QR, NFC, and RFID, a Golang smart-contract layer tokenizing passports into NFTs, an Amazon QuickSight analytics engine, AWS storage for metadata, role-specific web interfaces, iOS and Android apps for field workers and consumers, and an admin panel. The blockchain layer was first built and tested on Ganache before touching the live network, with automated and manual testing throughout.
