Challenge

Native Plant Trust faced the challenge of managing extensive data on rare plant species stored across disparate systems, including Microsoft ACCESS, ArcGIS, IrisBG, and their website, GoBotany. These systems lacked cohesion, leading to inefficiencies, duplicate datasets, and difficulties in data management. Additionally, the existing database, NORM, was not optimized for research and conservation purposes, storing data in a cumbersome format.

Solution

To address these challenges, Native Plant Trust partnered with Kanda to develop and implement a new database solution called SPROUT (Species Rare Occurrence Utility). SPROUT aimed to make data more usable for research and conservation, reduce manual data entry, improve data management, and create a flexible and adaptable system. The technology stack utilized included Microsoft Azure, ASP.NET, C#, EF, ADO.NET, and MS SQL.

Results

The implementation of SPROUT resulted in significant improvements in data management and research capabilities for Native Plant Trust. Conservation volunteers were able to parse large quantities of data directly into SPROUT, freeing up valuable resources. Over 8,700 field forms were transcribed by volunteers in just over a year, demonstrating the increased efficiency of data management. Moreover, the new database facilitated research endeavors, such as a study on changing plant phenology in New England, providing valuable insights into the impact of climate change on native plant species.
