Challenge

The client, a Norwegian founder, wanted to build HUDD – a hyperlocal social networking platform that could reconnect real neighbors, local communities, and small businesses across Scandinavia. His goal was to offer a credible alternative to global social networks, where important local information and community updates are often drowned in noise, algorithms, and irrelevant content. He needed a product that would feel closer to a digital “town square” than another engagement-driven feed.

The main challenge was to design and build a platform that truly works at the neighborhood level. It had to surface nearby incidents, events, associations, and businesses in real time while keeping the experience simple enough for everyday users and robust enough for municipalities and organizations. At the same time, the client wanted to avoid the typical problems of big social platforms: fake profiles, low‑trust interactions, and opaque algorithms that decide what users see.

From a technical and delivery perspective, the solution had to cover web, iOS, and Android in a single product ecosystem, powered by a scalable backend capable of handling real‑time feeds, messaging, and location‑based content. The platform also needed to integrate with national identity systems (BankID and MitID), local payment methods (Vipps), and support monetization via subscriptions and in‑app purchases. Finally, the client was not looking for a one‑off build, but for a long‑term technology partner able to drive the product from first release to nationwide and then multi‑country adoption.

Solution

Snotor assembled a dedicated development team covering web development, iOS and Android app development, backend engineering, UX/UI design, QA, and ongoing product support. Over approximately 24 months, the team designed and delivered a production‑ready web app, then native mobile apps, all running on a single backend. The frontend stack uses React for the web and React Native for mobile, while the backend is built on Node.js with NestJS, PostgreSQL, Redis, Kafka, and a microservices architecture on AWS. This combination allows HUDD to handle real‑time feeds, messaging, and location‑based content as the user base scales.

Product‑wise, we defined several core modules. A hyperlocal interactive map powered by Mapbox shows nearby residents, events, incidents, and businesses, giving users an at‑a‑glance view of what is happening around them. A social feed and communities let people follow local updates and topics rather than generic viral content. We implemented full messaging support for direct chats, group conversations, business chats, and event‑based discussions so neighbors and organizations can coordinate in real time.

For businesses and associations, we built a dedicated toolbox: self‑service profiles, a structured place for offers and updates, and a Deals section surfaced to nearby users. Users can switch between personal and business profiles within one account. To encourage daily engagement, we helped the client design the “Morning Coffee” widget, which aggregates local weather, events, and birthdays and gives people a daily reason to open the app.

Trust and safety were treated as first‑class features, not afterthoughts. We integrated Norwegian BankID, Swedish BankID, MitID and Vipps‑based verification, allowing only real, identifiable residents to join. On the monetization side, we configured in‑app purchases and Vipps payments for subscriptions and premium features aligned with Scandinavian user behavior. The platform was localized and launched in Norway, Denmark, Sweden, Greenland, and Svalbard, with our team continuing to optimize performance, reliability, and user experience as adoption grew.

Results

Public data shows that HUDD quickly moved from concept to a leading position in its niche. Within the first months after launch, the platform reached around 35,000 registered users in Norway. Over the following year, it grew to well over 170,000 users across Scandinavia, becoming a real alternative to global social networks for local communication.

Adoption was not limited to individuals. More than 15 Norwegian municipalities started using HUDD to communicate with residents, alongside over 700 associations and local businesses in Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. This validated the decision to invest in strong identity verification and local‑first user experience: municipalities and organizations were willing to move sensitive community communication away from global platforms into a dedicated, verified environment.

On mobile, HUDD reached top positions in the Norwegian App Store and Google Play in the Social Networking category, at times outperforming global players like Facebook and Threads. The app maintains an App Store rating around 4.4/5 based on hundreds of reviews, with users emphasizing ease of use, relevance of local content, and the absence of typical “big social” noise and random virality. For the client, this translated into a fast‑growing, high‑trust user base and a strong positioning as a Scandinavian, privacy‑first social platform.

For Snotor, the project demonstrates the ability to deliver an end‑to‑end solution for a complex social networking product: from initial discovery and UX design, through cross‑platform web and mobile development and deep integrations with national identity and payment systems, to launch, localization, and long‑term product evolution. HUDD continues to grow in users, geography, and features, with our dedicated team acting as the client’s core technology partner rather than a one‑off vendor.
