Development of the Official Temporal PHP SDK for Workflow Orchestration
Challenge
Temporal needed an official PHP SDK that could bring its workflow orchestration platform to the PHP ecosystem while maintaining the same reliability and execution model as existing SDKs written in Go, Java, and TypeScript.
There was no prior PHP implementation to reference, which meant the SDK had to be designed from the ground up while remaining fully compatible with Temporal’s architecture and workflow execution model. The project also required alignment with Temporal’s engineering standards and open-source contribution practices, where reliability, developer experience, and long-running workflow execution were critical requirements.

Solution

The SDK supports workflow and activity execution, durable state handling, and integration with Temporal’s distributed execution model. Existing SDK patterns from other languages were analyzed and adapted to PHP constraints while preserving compatibility with Temporal’s server architecture.
The project included close technical collaboration with Temporal’s engineering team through iterative development and open-source contribution workflows. Comprehensive documentation, tutorials, and integration examples were delivered to support adoption within the PHP community.
