Challenge

Gorgias needed to scale its AI support platform from simple reactive interactions to complex, event-driven workflows capable of handling cancellations, upsells, and multi-step customer conversations across channels.

The system had to orchestrate thousands of concurrent AI agents while maintaining reliability, traceability, and customer context during retries, asynchronous waits, and external API calls. The architecture also needed to bridge multiple technology stacks, with AI models running in Python and orchestration logic implemented in TypeScript.

At the same time, the team wanted to reduce DevOps overhead and validate whether Temporal Cloud could support production-scale agentic AI workflows.

Solution

A Temporal Cloud orchestration architecture was designed and implemented to coordinate long-running, multi-agent workflows across customer support operations.

Each AI agent operates as an independent Temporal Workflow, enabling asynchronous execution, distributed transactions, retry logic, and durable state management. Saga patterns and async workflow handling allow agents to pause, resume, and continue customer conversations across email, SMS, and chat channels without losing context.

Temporal’s polyglot SDK support was used to integrate Python-based AI models with TypeScript orchestration services into a unified workflow ecosystem. The system also includes permissioning, auditability, failure recovery, and integration with Gorgias’s live enterprise systems.

The implementation began with a focused spike to validate orchestration patterns before scaling into production workloads, allowing the engineering team to adopt Temporal incrementally while transferring workflow knowledge internally.

Results

Within four weeks, Gorgias deployed its first Temporal-powered AI agents into production. The system now orchestrates independent workflows for support, sales, and management agents operating across customer communication channels.

The platform automated up to 60% of repetitive support requests while increasing conversion rates by 62%. Managed Temporal Cloud infrastructure reduced DevOps overhead and simplified workflow operations.

The workflow architecture improved reliability, accelerated iteration speed, and established a scalable orchestration model for future AI initiatives across the company.
