VR Forklift Training: The next evolution for OSHA-compliant training
Challenge
The client needed a training solution that engages Gen Z while being easy to use for Gen Y and boomers. The training had to be captivating, safe, and cost-effective, with a focus on real-life scenarios. Integrating these needs into a VR solution presented several challenges, including creating a user-friendly experience for all generations while managing the complexity of realistic training. Motion sickness was a concern with VR, especially for motion-based applications. Additionally, the client required features to track training progress, control user access, and integrate specialized hardware like forklift controls to ensure seamless communication between software and devices.

Solution
When our client approached us with the need for a comprehensive forklift training solution, we proposed a combination of VR and web technologies to meet their requirements. The VR simulation offers a realistic sit-down forklift training experience, while the web portal supports administrative tasks and records training summaries. Travancore Analytics built a highly detailed warehouse and sit-down forklift using 3D software, integrating it into a sophisticated yet user-friendly Windows application created with Unity. The application, distributed through a secure web portal, features a license-based system. It includes two sections: the VR training module, accessed through the VR headset, and the Replay session, where users can review past sessions from multiple camera angles and 360-degree perspectives. The program is compatible with the HTC VIVE Pro 2 headset, Logitech steering wheel, and a specialized forklift controller that simulates real-world electronic controls. Designed with OSHA guidelines in mind, the training system provides a safe, engaging, and realistic forklift training experience, with varying modules to suit different skill levels.

Results
Industrial training is being revolutionized by VR, providing a secure, cost-effective, and engaging learning environment. By offering a realistic and immersive experience that mirrors real-world scenarios, it allows workers to learn by doing. Through VR, businesses can create customized training programs tailored to their specific needs, track employee performance, and enhance training effectiveness. The application we’ve discussed has a significant impact, particularly in PIT training.
