Challenge

FeelEat operates a premium catering model that is unusual in Swiss corporate dining: chef-made meals cooked centrally, jarred fresh, and stocked in IoT-connected fridges placed inside client offices. The physical side of the concept worked. The commercial side had no viable interface.

An unstaffed fridge in an office lobby creates problems a normal restaurant never faces. There is no till, no cashier and no one to answer a question, so every purchase decision has to be made by the employee alone, in under a minute, standing in a corridor between meetings. Menus change daily and stock depletes through the day, which means anything printed or static is wrong within hours. Swiss corporate catering is also subsidy-driven — each employer funds meals differently, so two employees standing at the same fridge must legitimately see two different prices for the same jar.

Allergen and nutritional transparency is not optional in this market. Buyers need ingredient origins, allergen markers and nutritional data before they commit, and a mistake here is a safety issue rather than a service complaint.

The hardest constraint was the fridge itself. An open, unmonitored fridge in a shared workspace loses stock steadily, and an early version of the concept had exactly that problem. Access had to be controlled and tied to a real transaction, without introducing a card reader, a queue or anything that would make the experience slower than a vending machine.

Underneath all of this, the app could not be a standalone product. It had to reflect the actual state of the kitchen system, the IoT fridge network and the operations ERP in real time — because a menu that shows a dish already taken from the fridge destroys trust in the entire concept on the first attempt.

FeelEat also needed to expand across Switzerland's language regions, so the solution had to support German, French and English without a rebuild, and run natively on both iOS and Android with a team of the size a scaling food business can actually sustain.

Solution

CODT designed and built FeelEat's consumer mobile app as the central touchpoint of the service — menu, payment, loyalty and physical fridge access in one flow. It is built in Flutter from a single codebase, delivering a native-feeling experience on iOS and Android, and architected for multi-language expansion across Switzerland's German, French and English regions.

Live menu and inventory. The daily menu is driven by real-time availability synced to fridge stock, so the app only ever offers what is physically there. Dishes are categorised with photography, ingredients, nutritional information and allergen icons, giving buyers what they need to decide in seconds.

Personalised pricing. Each employee sees their own employer's subsidy applied at the item level, alongside dish-level discounts, flash offers, meal combos and promotions shaped by purchase behaviour.

Smart ordering. Users buy in the app or through the fridge's QR interface, with cart and instant checkout wired directly into the live inventory system.

Wallet and payments. An in-app wallet with recharge support and secure payment-gateway integration, multiple payment methods, monthly transaction history and itemised receipts including TVA.

Loyalty. Rewards accrue automatically as users spend, with a visual progress ring, redemption history and reward notifications, so the mechanic is legible without the user tracking anything.

Order history, ratings and favourites. Full purchase history with one-tap reorder, dish ratings and reviews, saved favourites, and notifications when a favourite returns to the menu.

News and updates. Company announcements, seasonal articles, chef interviews, promotions and holiday specials keep the app relevant between purchases.

QR fridge access. The app doubles as the key. The user scans to unlock the IoT-controlled fridge, takes what they want, and walks away while the wallet is debited automatically — turning access control into the checkout itself rather than an extra step.

Under the hood the app talks to FeelEat's wider ecosystem over RESTful APIs, drawing menu and inventory data from the kitchen system, the IoT fridge network and the operations ERP. What the user sees is always what is actually in the fridge — which is what makes a checkout-free experience credible enough for people to repeat it daily.

Results

The app turned an unstaffed fridge into a complete retail channel, and the numbers followed.

Adoption. Over 40,000 downloads across iOS and Android, with the app becoming the default way employees at FeelEat's client companies buy lunch — not an optional add-on to the fridge, but the way the fridge is used.

Stock loss. Tying access to an authenticated transaction cut fridge theft by approximately 90%. This was the single largest commercial impact: it converted the smart-fridge concept from a model that leaked margin in every deployment into one that could be rolled out to new corporate sites profitably.

Speed. The full journey — open app, browse, scan, unlock, take, leave — runs in under 30 seconds. No till, no queue, no cash. That speed is what makes the service viable in an office where lunch competes with a meeting.

Trust in the menu. Real-time inventory sync means users do not walk to a fridge for a dish that is already gone. Removing that failure is what allowed daily repeat purchasing to become habitual rather than occasional.

Operational leverage. Personalised subsidy pricing, automatic loyalty accrual and itemised TVA receipts are handled entirely in software, so FeelEat can onboard a new corporate client with a different subsidy arrangement without any manual reconciliation work.

Business outcome. The app is one of six connected systems CODT has built for FeelEat on a shared data layer, spanning the kitchen, the fridges, the mobile app, the client portal and the operations ERP. Over the course of the engagement FeelEat has grown into a business valued at over CHF 10 million, and the platform now supports expansion across Switzerland's language regions from the same Flutter codebase.

The relationship has run for several years and continues today, with the same engineers who built the original app maintaining and extending it.
