Challenge
Dutton Tools is a woodworking tools manufacturer making the transition from distributor-led offline sales to direct-to-consumer ecommerce. The project involved launching a Shopify store that clearly explains technical products to both professional woodworkers and serious hobbyists — a category where buying decisions are driven by specifications rather than visuals.
Key challenges included explaining technical products in a clear and digestible way without overwhelming buyers; making a relatively small catalog feel robust, complete, and credible; appealing to two distinct audiences — working professionals and enthusiast hobbyists — with different knowledge levels; structuring product pages and filters to support specification-driven decision-making; and balancing fast page performance with the detailed technical content required to convert buyers in this category.

Solution
The build focused on clarity, structure, and performance. A pre-made Shopify theme was customized to place product information front and center — with design and layout decisions made to make technical content readable, not intimidating. Product pages were designed to highlight features, specifications, and use cases clearly in a format that supports confident decision-making.
Collections and filters were structured to allow fast, specification-based navigation — so buyers can find the right tool without browsing through irrelevant products. Layouts were kept clean to prevent information density from feeling overwhelming. Site speed was heavily optimized to maintain strong performance despite detailed product page content. Multiple payment options including Shop Pay, Google Pay, and Affirm (buy-now-pay-later) were configured to reduce purchase friction for higher-value tool purchases.

Results
The finished Shopify store achieved a 1.4-second average load time — one of the fastest in the category — supporting strong organic performance and mobile conversion. Products are clearly explained, filters help buyers narrow choices quickly, and the overall experience supports confident purchasing decisions without friction. Dutton Tools now has a direct-to-consumer ecommerce foundation that supports growth, reinforces product quality, and serves both professional and enthusiast audiences equally well. The move from distributor-led sales to DTC is supported by a store built for conversion: technically clear, fast-loading, and credible from the first visit.
