Challenge

Lab Alley, a US distributor of laboratory and industrial chemicals, needed to manage complex ecommerce operations involving hazardous materials, shipping costs, product data, and regulatory requirements. Its Adobe Commerce platform handled a large product catalogue, but standard ecommerce functionality could not address many specialized operational needs.

A major challenge was the lack of order-level shipping cost reconciliation. Carrier invoices and collected shipping charges could not be matched consistently, making it difficult to identify where shipping losses occurred. The business also faced incomplete product weight information, complex hazardous-material handling rules, and manual compliance processes.

The company needed reliable integrations and automated workflows to improve operational accuracy, manage its catalogue safely, and gain better visibility into shipping expenses.

Solution

Eye4tech developed and maintained a set of custom ecommerce and operational solutions integrated with Lab Alley's Adobe Commerce environment.

The engineering work included an order-level shipping reconciliation system that compares carrier invoices against individual orders and categorizes shipping charges into eight fee types. A specialized hazardous-material fee service was implemented to calculate charges using product classification and packing requirements.

Eye4tech also built a bulk catalogue validation and update process with preview, controlled execution, and rollback capabilities. Additional work included a freight quotation service integrating multiple carriers, Magento-to-CRM middleware, product compliance workflows, and subscription analytics.

Supporting applications and integrations were deployed on AWS with managed deployment processes and scheduled backups.

Results

The project delivered measurable improvements in shipping reconciliation, catalogue accuracy, and business operations.

The shipping reconciliation system successfully matched 96.7% of orders to their corresponding carrier invoices, allowing the business to identify shipping costs at the individual order level.

Eye4tech audited 4,132 product SKUs against live production data, helping identify and address catalogue inconsistencies that affected freight calculations and shipping operations.

The implemented hazardous-material fee service also provided more consistent fee calculations using product-specific classification information.

The engagement demonstrates a continuous nine-year client relationship, with Eye4tech continuing to maintain the operational platform, shipping integrations, and production ecommerce workflows.
