Challenge

GoodShape's enterprise wellness platform — used by 200+ large UK employers including NHS, Philips, and Heathrow Express — was running on a monolithic architecture with tightly coupled modules, outdated libraries, no frontend automation, and manual-only QA. Every release carried high regression risk. Adding or modifying features required disproportionate effort, and quality validation happened too late in the cycle to prevent production issues.

Solution

We delivered a full-stack modernisation across three parallel streams. Backend: migrated from monolith to microservices using Java 17, Spring Boot, RabbitMQ, and Keycloak; refactored high-risk modules; and built new capabilities including an automated reporting engine replacing 50-slide manual PowerPoint workflows, a push notification microservice, and fitness tracker data aggregation across 16 brands. Frontend: replaced the facade pattern with inline editing, optimised AG Grid rendering for large datasets, and restructured the codebase into modular subprojects. QA: rebuilt the automation foundation from scratch — API-first coverage, UI automation introduced from zero, and full CI/CD integration via Jenkins with 15 parallel execution threads.

Results

~3,800 automated test scripts across web and API. 90% of test cases automated, ~95% regression coverage, regression cycles accelerated 2–3x, ~95% reduction in post-release defects. Platform continues to support 200+ enterprise clients at scale. GoodShape won GOLD at the ECCCSA Awards 2020 in Most Effective Application of Technology — ahead of Microsoft, which received Silver.
