Challenge

A global content delivery network and cybersecurity company wanted its first learning management system, built to increase customer knowledge across its product portfolio at no cost to the learner. The platform had to be ready for presentation at the company's annual conference, which left under four months from start to launch, with no room to slip the date.

Solution

To hit the timeline, Oktana built on an existing immersive learning platform for the LMS fundamentals and focused its effort on extending that base to meet the client's requirements and create a distinctive experience. Key elements of the solution included:

  • Developed the backend using the Laravel PHP framework with Nova providing the administrative panel.
  • Built the front end with VanillaJS and jQuery, hosted on Heroku for backend performance and scalability as demand grew.
  • Kept the Heroku application and the underlying learning platform synchronized using Segment to forward events and Pusher to return notifications.
  • Integrated gamification features including badges, points, and progression through missions and quests.
  • Embedded a code editor and file system for hands-on learning inside the platform.
  • Integrated CircleCI with GitHub to run unit and functional tests automatically on every deployment.

Technologies: Heroku, PHP, Laravel, Nova for Laravel, VanillaJS, jQuery, Segment, Pusher, CircleCI, GitHub.

Results

More than 300 companies joined the platform within the first two months, and over 1,200 users completed missions. The client launched its first learning management system on schedule for its annual conference, with gamification and hands-on coding built in from the start rather than added later.
