Challenge

Medical assistant training has long relied on traditional methods — classroom instruction, printed materials, and supervised practice on real patients or physical mannequins. These approaches are not only expensive and logistically demanding, but also limit the volume and frequency of hands-on practice available to each trainee. Mistakes during live practice carry real risk, and the quality of training often depends heavily on the availability and consistency of individual instructors.

The client needed a fundamentally different approach: a scalable, realistic, and risk-free environment where medical assistants could practice complex clinical procedures at their own pace, receive immediate feedback on their technique, and build genuine confidence before working with real patients. The solution also needed to support institutional adoption — tracking individual progress, enabling instructor evaluation, and aligning with healthcare training standards across more than 100 institutions.

Solution

Onix developed a fully immersive VR training application for medical assistants, built in Unity for Meta Quest (Oculus Quest and Quest 2) headsets using the VRTK toolkit. The application replicates real clinical environments with high fidelity and guides trainees through standardized medical procedures using a virtual instructor that provides real-time, step-by-step feedback.

The platform supports three distinct training modes tailored to different stages of learning. In Teaching Mode, the virtual instructor demonstrates procedures with visual cues and detailed guidance. Training Mode allows hands-on practice with live error correction — the system identifies incorrect actions and redirects the user immediately. Execution Mode presents an independent assessment environment where trainees complete procedures without assistance, enabling objective performance evaluation.

A built-in progress tracking system records each session, captures performance data, and allows instructors to review trainee progress over time. Trainees can also revisit their past attempts to identify areas for improvement. The architecture was designed for customization and future expansion, supporting additional procedures and institutional configurations without structural rework.

The project was delivered by a cross-functional team of 6 specialists over 24 months.

Results

The VR training platform has achieved significant adoption and measurable learning outcomes across the healthcare sector:

5,000+ medical assistants trained on the platform
100+ medical institutions actively using the application
90% improvement in skill acquisition compared with traditional training methods
85% of users report increased confidence when performing medical procedures after completing VR training
Reduced training costs compared to traditional instructor-led or mannequin-based programs
Faster onboarding of new medical staff without proportional increase in instructor workload
A scalable foundation ready to support additional clinical procedures and expanded institutional rollout
