Challenge

Rarible started as an Ethereum NFT marketplace, but its users and partner brands were spending more and more time on other chains. To follow them, Rarible needed its marketplace and collection contracts to run on very different virtual machines, from Solana to Aptos. It also needed a way for NFTs to move between those ecosystems. The hard part was doing all this without losing the reliability and developer experience that builders already counted on.

Solution

Solution
Our senior Web3 engineers led the rewrite of the core contracts for each new environment:

Rust with Anchor for the Solana Virtual Machine, including Eclipse
Move for Aptos
deployments on new EVM-compatible chains

We designed a burn-and-mint bridge between Ethereum and Solana, built contracts for fully on-chain random card packs with tiered rarity, and added upgradeability patterns and deterministic deployment to the original Solidity contracts. To make adoption easier, we shipped SDKs and CLI tools in Rust and TypeScript.

Results

Rarible now works the same way across multiple chains, and users can move NFTs between Ethereum and Solana. The on-chain card packs created a new kind of collection for brands and creators. The new tooling helps internal and external teams launch marketplaces and collections faster. The collaboration has continued for several years.
