The McGill Diabetes Technologies Lab needed an advanced digital platform to support research and improve diabetes management for patients living with Type 1 diabetes. Managing complex patient data, integrating medical devices, and evaluating insulin treatment effectiveness presented significant technical and operational challenges.
Researchers required a centralized system to collect, organize, visualize, and analyze patient information while maintaining data security and accessibility. Existing research workflows needed greater efficiency, particularly in managing study participants, reviewing treatment data, and generating meaningful insights.
Patients also needed an intuitive mobile application capable of communicating wirelessly with medical devices, collecting real-time health information, and supporting personalized insulin management through advanced algorithms.

Solution
VT Digital designed and developed euGlide, an integrated diabetes management and research platform consisting of an Android mobile application and a web-based research portal.
The Android application was developed using Java and Kotlin, with wireless medical device connectivity to enable real-time data collection and support algorithm-driven insulin dosage management. The interface was designed with usability and accessibility in mind, helping patients interact with their diabetes management tools more easily.
For researchers, we developed a web application using Vue.js, providing centralized study and participant management, interactive data visualizations, and secure data export capabilities for further analysis.
The platform leveraged Google Cloud and Firebase services, including Firebase Realtime Database, Cloud Functions, and Firebase Authentication, to support data synchronization, backend processes, and authenticated access. Realm supported mobile data management, while Firebase Crashlytics helped monitor application stability.
The resulting solution connected patient-facing functionality with powerful research tools, creating a streamlined environment for diabetes monitoring, data analysis, and ongoing clinical research.
